Vallerysthal MEPHISTOPHELES Hand Painted Milk Glass Vase
This hard to find milk glass vase from Vallerysthal (France) features Mephistopheles on two sides, and a rose design on the other two sides.
The vase is hand painted in pastel shades with roses around the neck. Since Vallerysthal did not paint their glass, artists retained by the owners painted some pieces to personalize them. Also, it should be noted that many enterprising Victorian ladies, painted china and glass as a genteel hobby. In either case, the free-form design is very well done.
Dimensions: Vase measures 8 3/4" high.
Marks/Dates: c. 1880's-1890's. Shown on page 156 (plain) of the Collector's Encyclopedia of Milk Glass y Betty & Bill Newbound.
Condition: No chips or cracks. The painting is consistent with just a bit of gold loss around the rim (see photo).
